Activity 1: The Waiata - A Song in Your Heart

In the past, Māori would often use song as a way of sharing information or communicating emotions.  A waiata is the name given to a traditional Māori song. One of my all-time favourite waiata is Kia Paimarie. What about you?

Use Google to research traditional Māori Waiata. Listen to a number of Waiata and read the lyrics. On your blog tell us which one of the waiata you found you like the most. Why do you like it? poi e because there is a part for girls only and boys only

Activity 2: Playing Games

Hundreds of years ago, young Māori children were taught to play a number of games, including Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa. Read about each of these four games on the Rangatahi tu Rangatira website. Have you played any of them before? Poi Rakau is restricked, I have not played nor heard of Ki O Rahi, / Isn’t it cool how the games have been passed down for generations?

Choose one game, and on your blog, tell us the (i) name of the game, (ii) the goal or purpose of the game, and (iii) two rules.

Bonus Activity: Musical Festivals – Matatini

In New Zealand, a huge festival is held every two years, called Te Matatini. This performing arts festival celebrates the tikanga (culture or customs) of Māori. Kapa Haka groups from around New Zealand are invited to attend the festival and each group gives a 25-minute performance. The performances are judged and the best teams win prizes.

The gold medal winning team from this year (2017) was Te Kapa Haka o Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti.

SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY! Day 1

For Four Weeks I will be posting on things about New Zealand. Dear Hayley
It is so scary out here we are ruining out of food and I got put as the cook, and I have to fish to find a big fish to feed everyone. But i'm not the best fisher in the world the best fisher on the Waka Die because he fell over bored while fishing for a fish. I wish you were here with me.


This place is scary and not a place for me to. I hope I will see you before we both Die and not see anyone anymore.

SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY! Day 2: It’s All in a Day’s Work

For Four Weeks I will be posting on things about New Zealand. Today is the first day for the summer learning Journey and the title for todRay is In The Beginning ( 1800-1870).  Here are all the links for today's Activity's Maori Housing -Te Noho Whare ,



Activity 1: A House Or Home?
1. They carve in memories and history onto the walls while we have memories with objects.
2. They originally were made of bark, leaves and dirt, while European made their own materials with more room.
3. They hold funerals, to say goodbye and good luck, inside the Wharepuni while we use churches.

Activity 2: The Rules Of Engagement
All women were expected to marry at a young age.
Women were to stay at home with their children while Men had to go and work outside their homes.
Men and women are ow able to choose their paths and when and who they want to marry.

Bonus Activity: Special Meals 

1. Finely chop the onion. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a knob of butter in a pan, add the onions and fry until lightly browned (about 7 minutes). Add the bacon and fry for a further 5 minutes, until it starts to crisp.
2. Add the rice and stock, and bring to the boil. Stir well, then reduce the heat and cook, covered, for 15-20 minutes until the rice is almost tender.
3. Stir in the peas, add a little salt and pepper and cook for a further 3 minutes, until the peas are cooked. Serve sprinkled with freshly grated parmesan and freshly ground black pepper.

The Naghty Nutcracker

This week pouni-o-toka have been doing Christmas roll a story for writing

CRASH! , BANG! ,”OOPS!” Go’s the naughty nutcracker that always broke the rules. One day he decided to go to the North Pole, when Santa found out that The naughty Nutcracker had made it to the North Pole. He got all his elves except for the best working ones to find him and send him home. When they found him they realised that he was going back in time and tried to stop him but failed. Then the oldest elf decided that they should travel back in time. Then they traveled back in time to capture the naughty elf, meanwhile the naughty elf was telling it self not to break Mum’s vase, and not to break Dad's guitar. Suddenly they found him and they found out that the nutcracker abhorred all of his bad decisions and was trying to fix them. After that they sent him home and put him on the good list by taking him off the bad list.
